Study Finds Gaps In Small Business Backup Process

Carbonite published the results of its small business survey and found that a surprising number of small businesses still rely on outdated technology for the important task of backing up their data. Carbonite also found that there continues to be a surprising number of business owners who persist in using the older methods in spite of known limitations and pitfalls when using these procedures.

The survey revealed that among the most popular backup methods for backing up are: (1) 50% used external hard disks; (2) 42% used USB/Flash drives, even though an incredible 94% of these thought that the method was unreliable; and (3) 33% relied on CD's/DVD's for their backups, even though 62% of them felt that the method was both risky and inconvenient.

Carbonite's vice president for small business, Peter Lawson, points out that these methods are antiquated, unreliable and inefficient. While using these methods for backing up data is initially easy and inexpensive to set up, they do require constant monitoring and implementation and are therefore eating into time that could be spent on other, more productive, tasks. The Carbonite study also found that 20% of the the small businesses surveyed were unaware of exactly how much data they actually had stored.

A survey conducted by Wakefield Research and Carbonite revealed that in spite of the fact that 51% of Americans have experienced some sort of computer hard drive crash wherein they lost all the digital files they had on their computers, 39% of those survey admitted that they still do not back up their computers, or have not done so in more than a year.

This complacent attitude towards managing risks associated with losing their all important digital files, which includes photos, music, video, financial, and other personal files is really surprising given that 40% of Americans think that they would not be able to recover, recreate, or repurchase all of their lost digital files in the event that their computers crash.

Another surprising finding of the survey was that 50% of Americans would rather lose all their vacation time for one whole year than lose all of the digital files stored on their computer. Another interesting finding of the survey was that 82% of Americans store most of their digital files nowhere else but their personal computer, with the average American storing $400 worth of digital music and movies on their computer. Furthermore, one in four Americans admitted that the music and movies that they have stored on their computer were worth more than the computer itself. 

Carbonite Achieves Key Milestones

Carbonite reported some key milestones it achieved during the conference call for its full year ended December 2011.

Aside from reporting record revenue, bookings, and cash flow, CEO David Friend reported that the company significantly expanded its product offerings for the small business market while also providing its consumer and home office users with new features and functionalities.

The company is also proud to report that it has completed the transition of customer support from overseas third-party providers back to the US. With its customer support location in Lewiston, Maine now staffed with highly trained Carbonite employees, the company is believes it is now in a better position to serve its customers.

The company also highlighted their backup milestones. Carbonite has now backed up nearly 200 billion files, restored more than 7 billion files, and at present backs up more than 300 million files a day.
